The Pro-Vaccination Emperor of 1869

A Newly Discovered Proclamation on Smallpox Reveals Emperor Norton's Priorities

Norton I. Dei Gratia, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico.

Being anxious to use heaven and earth for the obliteration of the small-pox, do hereby command the authorities of all the cities on the Pacific -

1st. That every person be vaccinated, under severe penalties.

2d. That teamsters driving persons to the hospital shall not get drunk and leave their patients on the streets, to spread the contagion.

3d. That physicians shall change their clothing after attending small-pox patients.

4th. That the churches ferret out and punish all persons who administer poisonous food and drinks, on religious, political, or national discussions.

Done in the city of Oakland, in the 16h year of our reign, and in the year of our Lord, 1869. Norton I.

Those were the days, when it was actually a thing to keep your subjects alive (part of the motivation was to have more soldiers for the wars, so there are always downsides...) Bavaria had mandatory smallpox vaccinations in 1807, W├╝rttemberg in 1805 and Prussia vaccinated schoolchildren and soldiers (and everyone since 1835). The german empire (est. 1871) got a vaccination mandate in 1874 (the law remained until 1983, but smallpox vaccinations were already stopped in 1976).

I recently rewatched Ghostbusters 2 (still not great, but not worthless) and I'm suddenly recalling the line where the NY mayor says spent the previous night talking to the ghost of Fiorello La Guardia.

Given how London Greed acts like someone who admired Scrooge before his life-changing encounter, I can imagine her being visited by the ghosts of like Emperor Norton in an attempt to get her to repent. (The late Ed Lee would be the Jacob Marley equivalent, trying to atone in the afterlife.)

Sounds like big government stamping on religious freedom to me. And did you know that Emperor Norton funded gain of function research on Smallpox for use as a biological weapon? On top of that, Emperor Norton was a deep state puppet propped up by San Francisco's intellectual and economic elite for the purpose of returning California to Mexico.
