A very long time ago I remember a post to some usenet group that someone had worked out vi (not some latter-day vi, but the vi that shipped with BSD) was Turing-complete. I am obscurely disappointed that this has not been written by painstakingly exploiting that.
(Searching for 'vi turing-complete' finds various later things: pretty sure what I remember was ~1990.)
