I live in Poland, the Europe's Roman Catholic version of Iran. The church here still cries about being constantly persecuted by left-wingers, gays, atheists, etc. It's just how catholicism operates.
Not just Catholicism, even if they make up a huge proportion of society any group of Believers will decide that not letting them do whatever they want is a form of persecution by the Others and cannot be tolerated. After all God told them to do it.
