Fairly certain that crude oil is a genuine eldritch horror.
- lied in wait in the Earth's crust for literally millions of years
- made from the dead bodies of creatures nobody in recorded history has ever seen alive
- almost immediately granted us advanced technology
- naturally occurring, yet has a scent incomparable to any other natural substance
- pitch black liquid
- kills anything it touches
- using it to make anything kills everything it DOESN'T touch, but very slowly
- inexplicably addictive to the money-poisoned
- Is the cause of the mass extinction event we're currently experiencing, and that 95% of people are completely unaware of or outright deny.

I had a similar thought back in 2018, and made a twitter thread about it (which my wife later turned into a blog post because some people hate reading twitter threads).
I saw the corpse of a bird in a starbucks parking lot, having clearly been run over several times, and started thinking about how we've crisscrossed the planet with ley lines made of the corpses of screaming war lizards carefully seasoned with the blood of innocent animals and our fellow humans who got in the way.
I don't think I was having a good day.
amusing...but flawed: fossil fuels are predominantly plant matter. but whatever. everything else checks out.
...and now you're in a Delta Green gaming session. Grats.
I was thinking yesterday that monster movies should use car noises as the kaiju's call. Since we're conditioned to find those sounds terrifying.
Let's see, what was the CO2 level during the Carboniferous...? About 800 PPM. They are turning our atmosphere back into their atmosphere.
