Previously
I'm currently re-reading Neuromancer, in acknowledgement of our current cyberpunk dystopia. I last read it maybe 12 years ago, and I remember thinking it hadn't aged well. This time, though, it feels just right. I find myself focusing less on the tech, and more on the lived-in culture.
Heck, if anything, Neuromancer seems almost optimistic compared to reality - Neuromancer has AIs, everyday space travel, and orbital vacation destinations.
How many young people will think the sky is blue because "The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel."
Do young people today engage with broadcast television in a way that "dead channel" has any meaning to them?
Having that mean, like, cobalt blue has got to be at least ten years out of date at this point.
I think they are likely to understand it as "the color of a TV set to the HDMI input of sleeping Nintendo Switch".
my 17 year-old said "club soda tastes like what static on tv looks like." i agreed and asked when she had ever seen static on the tv. "sometimes when you turn off the nintendo."
I got my copy of Apple Design off the shelf and went back over this period... Apple’s design group was contracting out to Milanese design firms and producing weird colourful concepts influenced by the “Memphis” design movement... it was crazy, especially compared to the aluminum minimalism of today.
But can it do Emacs ...
The early-90s palmtops in the 'Media Integration' section are pretty amazing, too. I'm sad nobody make such a thing still - if you want a minimalist cyberdeck with a full-sized keyboard, you kinda have to make it yourself.
