"Someone took another one of our soap dispenser handles as a trophy" is a thing that I have to say on the regular. Whyyyy? Do you put it on the shelf with your collection of empty beer bottles?

Elevator Phreaking

Inside The Hidden World Of Elevator Phreaking:

"I can dial into an elevator phone, listen in on private conversations, reprogram the phone so that if someone hits it in an emergency it calls a number of my choosing," Caruana told me in our first conversation. [...]

Call up most elevator phones and press 2, and you'll be asked to enter a password to reprogram them. In far too many cases, Caruana says, phone installers and building managers don't change those passwords from easily guessable default codes, allowing anyone to tamper with their settings.

Today in CV Dazzle News

Incognito:

The object is designed to protect the image against face recognition algorithms used in modern cameras installed in public space. It is a kind of mask made of brass [...] This project was preceded by a long-term study on the shape, size and location of mask elements so that it actually fulfills its task. When testing solutions, I used the DeepFace algorithm, which is used by Facebook.

DNA Lounge: Wherein we've got live music!

Some super exciting news! We now have a monthly local live music showcase! This has been made possible by the generosity of a friend of the club who is partly subsidizing these events, thus making it possible for us to pay the bands well and also not lose money on the project.

  • Wed, Aug 28: Chaki is a funk alien wizard from Outer Space. With his unique take on electro funk, he has brought his weird stage show to festivals on earth and shared the stage with like minded weirdos Peelander Z, El Vez, Bob Log Iii, Metalachi, Captured By Robots and the Oingo Boingo Dance Party. Rolling Stone said he is "like Prince except not sexy and much fatter".

  • Wed, Sep 11: Hot Laundry are a nonstop, maximum garage-soul and roll dance party the likes you haven't seen John Waters' first foray into teenage delinquency. They love P90's, fuzz boxes, cranked tweeds and tremelo on everything! Rock N Roll lets go... Down N Dirty Soul... Stomp/Surf/Beat... and Sonic Delta Blues! They eat fire! They wrestle gators! They lick flag poles!

  • Wed, Oct 2: Sick Pigeon is an original punk band formed and rooted in San Francisco's Tenderloin district. The band was built on friendship, frustration, and an undying love for punk music. It could be said that Sick Pigeon is what happens when you mix an Ecuadorian street punk with a giant heart, a Bay Area native born & bred on California punk, and a Midwesterner with a passion for classic punk and an Italian who's a gypsy at heart. In Sick Pigeon, they blend their influences, defying genres and trends, simply doing what feels and sounds good to them; with elements of cumbia, reggae and ska taking the forefront at times. A 4-piece band at it's core, Sick Pigeon often adds a horn section for it's high-energy live sets.

We would love to expand this series to more than one day a month, and that is certainly a possibility.... if you show up! (Or if we find a second sponsor.) Support your local live entertainment!

But wait, that's not all!

Just announced, on Fri, Sep 20 we have Halou, with an album release party for their first album in a decade. Halou first performed at DNA Lounge way back in 2002!

You may also know them by their alter ego, Stripmall Architecture, who last headlined here in 2013.

They are absolutely fantastic, and you shouldn't miss this.

Next up!

Kristeen Young is doing a three night residency for her record release, on Wednesdays Oct 9, Oct 16, and Oct 23.

If Tori Amos had been raised as a feral child, she might have sounded a bit like Kristeen Young. Like Amos, Young has a broad vocal range and embraces the piano as her musical instrument, but there's a wildly aggressive emotional energy in her work, as well as an intelligently transgressive mindset that marks her as a true original. She has released seven studio albums and has collaborated with Brian Molko of Placebo, Morrissey, David Bowie and Dave Grohl, producer Tony Visconti and the Damned.

Then we've also got:

Danger: Sat Sep 7
In a rare Saturday main room live show!
That really is a lot of great live music coming up, people.

I know we've been doing a lot of dubstep lately, but remember that we do all kinds of stuff here. Being all over the map is sort of our mission statement. I hope that some of this is to your liking!

Manicures and nipple-sucking.

Old Croghan Man:

died a violent death over 2000 years ago: stabbed in the chest, decapitated, and severed at the torso. Tossed in a bog in Ireland, his remains were preserved until his discovery in 2003. His manicured nails suggest he led a life of leisure.

His nipples were cut off. Sucking a king's nipples was an act of submission in Iron Age Ireland, so this insult may have been to prevent him from ruling. It's thought he was killed in a ritual sacrifice, perhaps after poor weather or harvests. He was in his early 20's.

Facebook to protect you from yourself with keyloggers

The Encryption Debate Is Over:

To solve this problem, Facebook announced earlier this year preliminary results from its efforts to move a global mass surveillance infrastructure directly onto users' devices where it can bypass the protections of end-to-end encryption.

In Facebook's vision, the actual end-to-end encryption client itself such as WhatsApp will include embedded content moderation and blacklist filtering algorithms. These algorithms will be continually updated from a central cloud service, but will run locally on the user's device, scanning each cleartext message before it is sent and each encrypted message after it is decrypted.

The company even noted that when it detects violations it will need to quietly stream a copy of the formerly encrypted content back to its central servers to analyze further, even if the user objects, acting as true wiretapping service.

Facebook's model entirely bypasses the encryption debate by globalizing the current practice of compromising devices by building those encryption bypasses directly into the communications clients themselves and deploying what amounts to machine-based wiretaps to billions of users at once.

Asked the current status of this work and when it might be deployed in the production version of WhatsApp, a company spokesperson declined to comment.

After publication, a Facebook spokesperson shouted "LOOK! BEHIND YOU!" and ran away.

Surveil yourself! You have no chance to survive!

"Most people play ball", says entirely trustworthy cop spokesman.

What has raised eyebrows, however, is the company's push for partnerships with law enforcement agencies across the country, a fact that some feel has allowed police to create informal surveillance networks in hundreds of neighborhoods. [...]

Fresno County Sheriff's Office:

"They chose to pay for a service that enables it to be viewed by either us or Ring. The consumer knows what they're getting into...If you're a good upstanding person who is doing things lawfully, nobody has concerns." [...]

However, he noted, there is a workaround if a resident happens to reject a police request. If the community member doesn't want to supply a Ring video that seems vital to a local law enforcement investigation, police can contact Amazon, which will then essentially "subpoena" the video.

"If we ask within 60 days of the recording and as long as it's been uploaded to the cloud, then Ring can take it out of the cloud and send it to us," he said.

Typically, this shouldn't be necessary though, Botti said. According to what police have been told by Amazon, most people "play ball" because they want their community to be a safer place, he said.

Compound Odontome

Scenes from the orthodontist's growing Magician Problem:

During the surgery, the operating surgeon noticed a well-defined bag like mass which was removed in its entirety. [...] On further evaluation by the oral pathologists, and to their utmost surprise the bag revealed 526 tooth like structures.

In the pathologists' own words "it was reminiscent of pearls in an oyster". It took 5 hours of meticulate searching to remove all the minute teeth from the opened bag like specimen. "This pandora box of miniature teeth is a jewel on our crown" said the postgraduates. The tooth sizes varied from 1mm to 15mm and each resembled a tooth with crown covered by enamel and a root like structure.

"They then arranged the teeth into a Summoning Grid to bind the elder thing colloquially known as the 'Tooth Fairy'", the press release did not conclude.
