The Twitter executive convened a rare private dinner with Republican leaders and conservative commentators in Washington last week at Cafe Milano, a familiar Georgetown haunt for city power brokers, according to four people who participated in the dinner but spoke on the condition of anonymity because it was off the record. The gathering came weeks after Dorsey provoked conservatives' ire by tweeting a story suggesting voters should elect Democrats in November -- and after he made his first official visit to Congress.
Among those attending the June 19 dinner were Mercedes Schlapp, a top communications adviser for President Trump; Grover Norquist, the leader of Americans for Tax Reform; television host Greta Van Susteren, and Guy Benson, a Fox News commentator, according to the people in the room.
Dorsey hoped to use the dinner as a way to build "trust" among conservatives who have long chastised the company, three of the people said. He defended Twitter against accusations that it targeted right-leaning users unfairly but still admitted that the company has room for improvement, according to the attendees.
In response, the Twitter executive heard an earful from conservatives gathered at the table, who scoffed at the fact that Dorsey runs a platform that's supposed to be neutral even though he's tweeted about issues like immigration, gay rights and national politics. They also told Dorsey that the tech industry's efforts to improve diversity -- after years of criticism for maintaining a largely white, male workforce -- should focus on hiring engineers with more diverse political viewpoints as well, according to those who dined with him in D.C.
A spokesman for Twitter declined to comment on the dinner.
Isn't he cute, though? He's got a hipster beard and a $4.8 billion net worth, and I hear that when he's not taking obsequious meetings with literal fascists he sometimes meditates!
Fuck you, Jack, you complicit piece of shit. Grow a spine. You can probably buy one for less than a billion.
Previously, previously, previously, previously, previously, previously, previously, previously, previously, previously, previously, previously.
I'd like to see Daria Dunchenko from a few posts ago gimp-sled Dorsey's useless ass naked down the side of a mountain of Lego until his wretched hipster-pizzle is reduced to a bloody nubbin
So far, I have convinced exactly zero of my friends to quit Twitter, in spite of it being bad for everyone who uses the platform. They’re as addicted to it like tobacco. And until more of us rediscover good, old fashioned boycotting/consumer action, we will continue to get the techbronocracy we all deserve.
I am unclear on what your endgame or aims are here. If twitter were to block Trump & co and threats of nuclear war, racists, isis etc, these people would move along to the next medium.
Continued successful boycotts of mediums and hosting services would eventually lead them to self host on private servers. Then what? Do you boycott their peering service?
This would then be effectively creating a racist/warmonger network and a 'normal' people network.
Which next medium is that? Oh wait, it doesn't exist.
I'm sure there's a vigorous community on White Power Dating dot Nonsense. Whatever. Deny them coverage. Deny them access. The First Amendment does not mean a right to be given a pulpit.
The level of abstraction that it takes for you to even hold this position: that's called "none of this shit will ever affect me., except in the most vague, emotional, mathematical way." There's another term for that, too.
The name of the medium is not important to me which is why I failed to specify: google+, facebook, wordpress.com, others that I am not aware of yet, or those that would be created to host their views.
My position is unclear even to me. Yes I am guilty of thinking about this abstractly. All it takes for evil to succeed is that good men do nothing. I may end up doing nothing as you are accusing, that may even be evil in itself. I am not really a fan of 'if you are not with us you are against us' as a mentality but people are entitled to think that.
Ultimately you do envisage private hosted services/right wing social media/right wing dating apps/fox news on one side and everybody else on the other. If the comprehension and debating abilities of both sides is so poor that this is inevitable, so be it.
As to the accusation that I think I will not be affected this: I understand well enough that we are all in this together.
tobias (1940): i don't understand why you trying to take a stand against nazis. if you boycott nazis then another party will exterminate jews. all you are doing by highlighting how much you hate nazis is move everyone further apart.
jwz: ffs, stand for something man.
tobias: taking a stand is difficult because things change. i probably won't do anything but not doing something sucks for some people too. let me rationalize some more and hopefully my conscience will be clear because my good intentions will be clear in retrospect, when a victor has been declared. until then i'd rather avoid conflict. do you have any recommendations where i can stand so i don't get any of this on me?
By all means tar those who disagree with you as facists and pacifists, but it is not very convincing to me. Maybe in the fullness of time you will be proven right but more likely you are very wrong. I would bet money on it.
Conservatives are not facists by anything other than the wildest leaps of imagination. Deliberate miscomprehension does not make for good debate. None of the names listed showed up in a cursory search of facist behaviour.
If you want to split into sects who can not communicate, by all means do so. You should know that both Republicans and Democrats have de facto signed up to the PNAC as evidenced by policies under Clinton, Kerry and Nuland (married into it!). With Bolton and Pompeo now representing they may likely do even worse.
And who said my intentions were pure? Americans seeing their foreign policy come a little closer to home is a good thing for the world. Kind of like how the Cuban Missile crisis worked.
If you wanted not to be complicit, you should have stopped paying taxes almost twenty years ago. By the way: if your country goes down the shitter, down I go with you.
at least you are now being honest about your motives. that's a start.
So you're the one behind n-gate.com!
(A succinct summary, thank you. I was lost in that thicket of fluff.)
