Clock of the Long Now: Installation Begins

After over a decade of design and fabrication, we have begun installing the first parts of the Clock of the Long Now on site in West Texas. In this video you can see the first elements to be assembled underground, the drive weight, winder and main gearing. This is the first of many stages to be installed, and we continue to fabricate parts for the rest of the Clock in several shops along the west coast.

I feel like I should be more cynical, but damn if it isn't an awe-inspiring idea.

Cool. Now when does the construction of the Concent of Saunt Edhar start?

How long before "A Logan Paul" shits on the gears or something? Because that's the New Normal: Sociopathy as Theatre.

Right. Because if you can’t do something positive and big then it is a lot easier to destroy somebody else’s accomplishment instead.

Hopefully society will begin to recognize these acts of malice for what they are. A good start would be to dis the selfies that involve violating fragile habitats or endangering people. Eventually work up towards acts of terrorism. A multigenerational project of tuning our culture.

So, I was going to wonder if this is going to be viewable by the public or just tucked off forever inaccessible in a corner of Jeff Bezos's ranch (which is the West Texas location where it's being installed). However, based on John Bigboote's comment, perhaps it's better if it's inaccessible to the public. Makes me sad how many assholes there are in the world who ruin the nice things for everyone.
