According to a screenshot of the identity test shared on Twitter on Tuesday and verified by Facebook, the prompt says: "Please upload a photo of yourself that clearly shows your face. We'll check it and then permanently delete it from our servers."
"Just like we probably maybe oughta do with your nudes."
In a statement to WIRED, a Facebook spokesperson said the photo test is intended to "help us catch suspicious activity at various points of interaction on the site, including creating an account, sending Friend requests, setting up ads payments, and creating or editing ads."
The process is automated, including identifying suspicious activity and checking the photo. To determine if the account is authentic, Facebook looks at whether the photo is unique. [...] The company declined to share details to prevent the system from being manipulated.
Facebook rolls out AI to detect suicidal posts before they're reported:
Facebook's new "proactive detection" artificial intelligence technology will scan all posts for patterns of suicidal thoughts, and when necessary send mental health resources to the user at risk or their friends, or contact local first-responders. By using AI to flag worrisome posts to human moderators instead of waiting for user reports, Facebook can decrease how long it takes to send help.
"Artificial intelligence" is what we used to call "grepping for keywords", right? Or does the fact that it's a TECHNOLOGY mean it has twice as many of the cybers?
Facebook previously tested using AI to detect troubling posts and more prominently surface suicide reporting options to friends in the U.S. Now Facebook is will scour all types of content around the world with this AI, except in the European Union, where General Data Protection Regulation privacy laws on profiling users based on sensitive information complicate the use of this tech.
"Complicate". Uh huh.
To paraphrase a friend: It'd be nice if they'd maybe try scanning for Moldovan Troll Farms before they started sending armed thugs to peoples' doors.

Fischer's pitch's perfectly positioned for pics perpetrating propositions improperly, while provisioning pained profiles for AI posturing, perhaps mo potentially so sporting a pouting puss.
Fischer's fake
Looks great

Christ, why do people put up with Zuckbook?
And I think the extra cyber is only part of it; the real secret of artificial intelligence is that it is a better magic black-box. "The computer must have made a mistake" excuse is no more valid, but when the programmer who wrote it can't explain why it outed you to your mother, what do you do?
The Corporation is slowly becoming more perfect. Soon, all the corporations will join the Corporation, and the Corporation shall be one with Interactive Voice Response. And there no humans are needed in the Corporation, and no escape.
Nah, "artificial intelligence" is just their way of "solving" the problem without doing the actual thing that might solve it, which is to hire more human moderators (since humans are the only ones that can understand context and nuance well enough to make this feature work). But human labor doesn't scale, or cannot scale without massively eating into their profits, so you know...
Anyway, not that I want to defend Facebook too much, but the first thing might actually be useful precisely as a defense against bots. As we know, an usual practice of bot creators (at least on Twitter) is to use pictures of random hotties scraped from around the net as profile pics, so if Facebook's intention is really to check whether the uploaded picture is unique, it might cut into that...
(Next stage in our current dystopia: third world companies offering pennies to people to take pictures of themselves on various settings, and then those pics are sold by the thousand to bot creators, much like credit card numbers or Twitter accounts...).
I'm pretty sure you've missed the point. They're doing this to become the de facto database for every single face on the internet.
Facebook doesn't give a shit about bots. They already know which accounts are bots, they're just not telling you. This will be a tool to enforce every human-seeming profile to have a facial-recognition-compliant image.
Well, yeah. I was talking about that feature in the abstract, assuming goodwill on Facebook's part. That's why I qualified what I wrote with "might".
Of course, "assuming goodwill from Facebook" is something so laughable that we are all sure that they have other ideas in mind...
Not a Zuckbook(er), nor a Twitty twitter, but if Fischer's note got posted, could cybers and the back-flipping robot rescue him from his decisions ...
I mean, even without a face, sigh
Why ask for a face shot, jack the camera, and be done wit it. You know, da front faces, maybe this just insures the back faces comply ...
Who needs the NSA/CIA when you have f*cebook and g**gle?
Do you understand public-private partnerships?
As a 3rd generation Moldovan troll farm operator, I resent this chilling and egregious misrepresentation of my, uh... nevermind. Twice the Cybers, bigger GBs!
I wonder what would happen if I uploaded the face of someone currently holding public office? Or wrote an app to generate unique composite photos from thousands of old grayscale high school yearbook photos? Endless opportunities to honor Eris.
