I was wondering if hares were just a European thing, but no, pretty much everywhere you get rabbits, there's hares as well. So I can only assume that the organisers just never realised that a rabbit is quite different from a hare.
(That said, I don't think you could keep a hare in captivity, and it would probably have freaked out inside a building with the hundreds of people and bright lights etc.)
