This quote has been haunting me recently:

"One side, our side, sees a foul as being against the rules, and if you do it too many times you have to be removed. The other side sees fouls as things you're allowed to get caught doing twice, and if you don't, you aren't trying hard enough."

"So you're mad at Jimmy because you think his side cheats at life."

"Partly. Mostly I'm mad because I'm pretty sure his side is going to win."

I always console myself by reminding myself that there's a high probability everyone I disagree with will die painfully, and permanently, someday in the future. Their contributions to existence will ultimately be irrelevant and forgotten, their constituent matter fading into nothing over trillions of years.

It's not nice. But then again, I didn't decide that was how life should turn out. Just making the best of a horrifying precipice.

"three fouls and you're out" is very optimistic. I wish we would be able roll back to those times.
