The only reason the recipe for an Old Fashioned says to muddle anything is because it predates granulated sugar. People started adding fruit because they felt like they should be muddling something, and then you're halfway down a sad, messy road.

But granulated sugar has been around since the fifth century. Sugar cubes, OTOH, were not invented until 1843, so maybe that was the start of muddling cocktails.
