I just realized that one of the designers on this project, Marc Fornes, is the architect of an amphitheater to be built near my home. (His first major US commission, actually.) I've blogged a lot about it; google "Chrysalis Symphony Woods" if you're interested.
The way these structures are designed and built is really interesting too: Fornes uses the Rhino 3D modeling software with custom Python code to create the curved surfaces and then to figure out how to cut out aluminum sheets to create the small pieces that are riveted together to make the final structure. The amphitheater near me will use the same technique, just with much larger and thicker pieces of aluminum.
