Afterlife With Archie

I just read the first comp of Afterlife With Archie, and it's actually pretty good! And man, it is dark.

Jughead's dog dies, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch uses the Necronomicon to bring it back to life, unleashing a zombie apocalypse. Hijinks, as they say, ensue.

DNA Lounge: Wherein Bela said Knock You Out.

At the last-minute Bar 9 party on Sunday, they had a pillow fight. In the immortal words of Marcellus Wallace: "In the fifth, your ass goes down." As pictured above.

Then the next day, at Death Guild, some guy asked DJ Sage to play Bela Lugosi's Dead.

Sage declined.

The guy kept nagging him, and then started laying bills on the DJ booth until there was at least $120 there. Sage still refused, so the guy took his money back, lit one of the bills on fire, and tossed it in the corner of the room.

Dear goths, that is not how you make it rain.

I wonder if it was this guy again.

Oh, and last month at a Battle of the Bands, some jackass started burning her name into the parklet surface with a crack torch. Then when security told her to stop, she tried to set him on fire. She went to jail. We had to sand and re-stain the whole thing.

Oh, and last week we had to do the same thing to the bar inside pizza, because some other jackass carved their happy pirate name into that.

Oh, and also last month, we had to replace something like thirty tiles in the men's room, because some other jackass had carved his happy pirate name into each of them.

Oh, and a couple weeks ago, some dumbass in a U-haul trying to make an illegal u-turn in the middle of the street crashed into our parklet with enough force to actually move it. I guess that plastic sheet we put down over the road before we poured the concrete base actually worked! I'm surprised. So the parklet is now about 6" closer to the curb than it used to be on one side, and doesn't drain properly any more. We had twelve guys out there pushing on it and it didn't budge, so we're going to have to use machinery. Hooray. Oh, also it's bent.

Will you people please knock this shit off??

Oderus Urungus's Viking Funeral

Ladies and Gentlemen. Rock and roll.

"Tonight we sent Oderus home in a fitting manner at the public memorial for Dave Brockie. A blazing Viking ship with Oderus laid out in it, the cuttlefish pointing proudly straight up.

"Watching my friend Dave's costume go up in flames in front of a thousand fans was so much more intense for me than the private memorial for friends and family we had April Fool's Day.

"I spoke at both of them, as GWAR asked me to, and both times as I spoke I was sad. But watching his alter ego burn tore me up way more than the first memorial, maybe because there was Dave, the human who was my friend who just 'left us' -- I never saw his body -- and then there was Oderus, who was something entirely else. To watch his stage gear burn was like watching part of my life literally go up in flames.

"We always use the indefinite article."

The Loudest Word in Rock and Roll

In the '70s, the choice to leave off the definitive became more clearly artistically significant. "With punk being a neo-traditional form, returning to the roots of rock 'n' roll, it explains again why we get 'the' names going, along with three-chord progressions and traditional band instrumentations. It shouldn't try and have pretentions more than that," Zimmer said. "It gets revived again with The Strokes and The Killers and The Hives." [...]

"There are 330 different bands that start with 'The B' out of 3,884 bands in my consideration set," Schnoebelen said. "The major takeaway is that [charting] bands that start with 'the' have a striking preference for the next letter to be: b, j, k, m, and z. Meanwhile, bands seem to avoid following the 'the' with a, e, i, p, t, and u.

"The easiest thing to explain is the dislike for vowels -- it's probably an avoidance of what linguists call a 'hiatus'," Schnoebelen continued. "That is, it's lousy to say 'The Eagles' (and a lot easier to pronounce it 'Theagles'). There are exceptions to these patterns, but right now these are the patterns that are popping out as most significant."

FMLE.app works but FMLECmd does not

Dear Lazyweb,

How can it be ts the GUI of FMLE is able to connect and stream video, but the command line version, running with the same XML file and as the same user, cannot?

These error-looking farts in FMLECmd's output (shared memory, mach ports, command not found) do not occur in the log when the GUI runs.

Also: how do I set the output frame rate? It is changing the resolution just fine, but if I set the frame rate to anything but 60, I get "an unexpected encoding error occurred" every 30 seconds, and it drops and reconnects.

Is there any non-GUI alternative to FMLECmd that runs on MacOS?

Graphics Generated by Levitated and Animated Objects in a Computational Acoustic-Potential Field

This novel graphics system is based on expansion of 3D-acoustic-manipulation technology. In the conventional study of acoustic levitation, small objects are trapped in the acoustic beams of standing waves. Here, this method is expanded by changing the distribution of the acoustic-potential field (APF), which generates the graphics using levitated small objects. The system makes available many expressions, such as expression by materials and nondigital appearance.

In the current system, multiple particles are levitated together at 4.25-mm intervals. The spatial resolution of the position is 0.5 mm. Particles move at up to 72 cm/s. The allowable density of the material can be up to 7 g/cm^3. This study used three options for APF: a 2D grid, high-speed movement, and a combination with motion capture. They are used to realize floating-screen or midair raster graphics, midair vector graphics, and interaction with levitated objects.
