There's something odd about Nicholas Cage in this picture. Did he get a haircut?

Amusingly, your hot-linking picture shows up when I read the RSS feed through theoldreader.com, so when I click through to here, firefox caches the image, so all I can see is the ball in an egg cup, until I refresh.

Apparently "The Old Reader" is sending referers that happen to look just like the pattern I'm matching to exclude sewers like 4chan. I have no motivation to work around their crappy decisions, so, sucks to be you. Use something better. I like Reeder.

      • phuzz says:

Reeder was a bit too shiny and web2.0 for me, so it looks like I'll be seeing more hairy ballsack. Still, that's preferable to some of the images you post ;)

Thanks for looking at it though.

You block 4chan referrers? Why? The site doesn't make urls into actual link tags, so everyone has to manually copy the links anyway, which obliterates the referrer header.

        • jwz says:

Not referers, hotlinking of images hosted on my server.

Also, they are a pile of assholes, and ignoring them violently is the right thing to do.

For the record, yes, I agree that we need assholes to do what assholes do. That doesn't mean I, or anyone else, needs to put up with them.

            • David M.A. says:

I don't believe it's possible to hotlink to external sites from 4chan either, but that's not really what this is about.

              • Nick Lamb says:

Yeah, I have no idea what set Jamie off there. If someone on 4chan likes an image posted here they'll just copy it, about which the anti-hotlinking code does nothing whatsoever.

4chan is encouragingly scrupulous (more so than, say, this site, or indeed most bank sites) about not muddling first and third party content, perhaps because it's the kind of place where holes (in people's thinking or in the technology they're using) get exploited rather than quietly reported. But the consequence is that it's not really part of the web at all, it can't link you to anywhere, and the rapid turnover means there's no point linking to anything you find on it.

Jesus Christ, shut up. Maybe it was some other cesspool raping my bandwidth. I don't give a shit. I mirror images I post, and I block hotlinking to my mirror. If the software you choose to use doesn't like that, tough titties.
