Have you accepted The Buggles into your heart?

Every now and then one of my audio-archive-manipulating cron jobs goes wrong and I get email like this:

    big_values too large! 377
hip: Can't step back 171 bytes!
hip: bitstream problem, resyncing skipping 1911 bytes...
hip: Can't rewind stream by 708 bits!
fatal error: can't update LAME-tag frame!

And every time I read it, in my head I hear, "Can't rewind, we've gone too far."

While not exactly what you're asking for, "Ready Player One" by Ernie Cline is extremely close. It's a very enjoyable novel of a dystopian future where 80s pop/geek culture has transformed into the dominant research field for those looking to get rich / take control of the universal networking system underpinning the remains of society. Up to you whether you consider that religion or not.

No Buggles references that I caught.

This is like found poetry. If you collected a bunch of things like this together you could publish it and read selections at a coffee shop to a bunch of hipsters in skinny jeans with ironic moustaches and ugly glasses. They’d all congratulate you afterwards with pseudo-insightful comments about the increasing role of digital technology in our lives and the beauty of recycling error messages into art.
