Mixed feelings about this one. I'm sure enough steel would make it stable but all those vertebrae joints would freak me out if I had to step on it and think about it at the same time.
Yeah, but really: By far the heaviest part of the stairway is the stairway itself. You (and your friends, and whatever the lot of you might be carrying) are just a drop in the bucket, like a motorcycle on a 6-lane interstate highway bridge; it doesn't even know you're there.
Looking at the pictures, I get the impression that there's a continuous tubes the entire length of the stairs and the vertebrae are short cylinders around this. Which would be helluva lot stronger then a bunch of cylinders connected to each other.
