What's funny to me is that the basic Lovecraftian premise that the universe wasn't made to be comprehended by the human brain is more credible today than ever.
I don't think it counts as "fan fic" when it's actually an adaptation of the original story. That's just "low budget adaptation".
But yes, it's made by a bunch of gamers whose hobby of making fake artifacts for their Cthulhu role-playing campaign got way, way out of hand. The making-of on the Call of Cthulhu DVD is pretty amazing. They did the whole thing in someone's back yard over a period of years.
And it's really, really well done. It feels so much like an authentic silent film. There were only a couple of scenes where something was very subtly off enough that I stopped buying it.
