mixtape 017

Please enjoy jwz mixtape 017.

It's mostly older stuff this time; I was aiming for the theme of "hiphop in unusual places".

And how's that working out for you?

I love that you put Ring Road on here. Highly underrated track in my opinion.

nice, I don't call myself a big hiphop fan, but im amazed at the number of tracks i recognized.

I like hip hop a lot, so I thought I'd give this one a listen. It was weird, as expected, but for some reason Pop Will Eat Itself - Ich Bin Ein Auslander reminded me of Body Count. I guess guitars will do that.

BTW, at the risk of mentioning something you already know and hate (this genre not in my realm of expertise), have you heard Deine Lakaien? Mixtape 15 made me think you might kinda like them.

I have a couple of not-very-good tracks by DL on comps...

Having only heard two DL songs in my life, I figured it might be a risk to mention them! I just looked up some more of their stuff on youtube and I see why you might be unenthused. I really like Vivre (maybe because it's in French?) and Kiss gets a pass by virtue of having bagpipes.

On the off chance that you were desperately hoping for some hip hop recommendations, you may be ... amused? ... by Gravediggaz - Diary of a Madman. Horrorcore! Mad goth, yo.

Oh, and in the same vein: Jean Grae - Taco Day. I think the rest of her stuff (that I've heard) pales in comparison, but this song is pretty great.

That video is pretty fucked up!

            • perligata says:

Yeah, and that's not even all (or the worst) of it. The song itself is about 10 minutes long and the rest of it is about how she kills her family and then shoots up her school during an assembly. It's fairly graphic too. Unfortunately, I can't find the lyrics online...

I usually don't listen much to Hip-Hop but this mix did it for me. Probably also because you picked pretty cool Drum&Base tracks. :) Had to think of The Prodigy at times, which I like alot, or Hive.

I'm not a huge hip-hop fan either, but how about Australia as an unusual place? I've had the Hilltop Hoods on heavy rotation at home for the last week. Try starting with The Nosebleed Section from The Calling:

I feel you should be aware of Cicada's Technology Crisis, as it contains pleasing beep-commodorish noises.

  7. waider says:

The first track on this sounds like something the Chemical Brothers may have sampled on Dig Your Own Hole. Not so keen on the rest, but hey.

Listening to this muzak while reading pro-Obama, pro-Ron Paul blogs.

    Good stuff. Thanks!

    i suggest adding:
    placebo - spite and malice
    NIN - down in it

This is the first mixtape I played, and I fell in love with it. The whole thing. Thank you.
