The Brothers Grimm
Van Helsing was a far, far better movie than The Brothers Grimm. I think BG may be the worst movie I've seen this year, and that's really saying something. Since I couldn't fast-forward, I actually started playing solitaire on my phone a couple times.

WORSE than Van Helsing?
Wow... I mean, just... oh, wow. Damn.
Really!? That's incredibly disappointing... :-/
How far Terry Gilliam has fallen.
I havent seen it yet, but its terry gilliam, how bad can it be? what was wrong with it iyho?
See, that's what I thought, too! But the answer turns out to be, "really, really, bad." It was cliched, it was predictable, the effects were mediocre, the humor was not even remotely funny, and worse of all, it was just plain boring.
I kept expecting a cameo by Jay and Silent Bob. And amazingly, that probably would have improved it.
a cameo by Jay and Silent Bob
"Snoochie Boochies Rapunzel! Do the curtains match the drapes?!!?"
It's "does the carpet match the drapes". In fact, often curtains and drapes are synonymous.
Aww man!! I'm disappointed to hear that! Guess that explains why I hadn't seen/heard much hype about it prior to it's release. :/
But Van helsing was so bad, so predictable that it went back around to entertaining. this thing didn't even manage that?
And it is Gilliam, I expected it to be bad.
I am bouleversè to hear that Gilliam's new movie sucked worse than Van Helsing. Till now I've always enjoyed his movies, even when they utterly depress me (e.g., Brazil and 12 Monkeys). Van Helsing was so bad that I too was able to find it entertaining again.
Guess I'll have to go anyway, or at least buy a ticket and see something else, so that he'll have a chance to redeem himself later on.
I was interested in seeing it, but it's getting such mixed reviews from people who had expected to like it.
Oh...btw...hello. I just added you. (I was an avid 'jwzrants' reader way back when and just found and added your lj.)
I'll admit I thought Van Helsing amused me, but it was kinda dumb.
I have pure hatred for Matt Damon, so I definately won't be seeing this movie now.
When will hollyweird stop pumping out the pabulum and get back to movies that people want to see?
When people stop paying to see bad movies. As much as we may not like 90% of films being made today, they're what turns a profit. Unless that changes expect to see this current trend continue.
AFAIK people are not going to see movies nearly as much as they used to.
Honest question: If it was that bad, why didn't you just... you know... walk out and do something fun?
I was already there, and I had nothing better to do...
I have a great tolerance for stupid movies, and even I had to stop watching Van Helsing. It was on cable, so I could change the channel. I even tried to like it, but just couldn't.
But yeah, all reports so far are steer clear of Brothers Grimm, unfortunately.
It was like a parody of Gilliam done by Gilliam. It was absolutely leaden and incoherent. Even Monica Belluci couldn't redeem the damn thing.
The art director eliminated the main director in a coup.
Sets with so much detail they might be fractal, plot so blank it's almost zen.
Okay, I strongly disagree here.
You could see in Grimm where the studio had totally hacked up this film. Bits of Gilliam's brilliance would sparkle through in very tiny spots, but most of it had been tampered with beyond repair.
Van Helsing still sucks donkey balls, even in comparison with Grimm.
Yeah baby.
I liked it. It was in no way a great movie, nor one of Terry's better movies, but i found myself enjoying the twists and turns from the origional legends. (have you ever read the tombs that they wrote? hundreds of tales including, more than 25 variants of the same story's old by various villagers across the black forest)
but then again im sure difference of opinion on movies is the reason real crap is produced.. like mousetrap.. *shudder*
now maybe from this he will have enough to do Good Omens!
Maybe we'll get a director's cut on dvd that is more coherent.
