the purportedly-contoversial new Madonna video

RealVideo here (mirror here.) I don't see what the big deal is, but perhaps it's more poignant if you get more than 5fps.
Scene missing! A video that used to be embedded in this post has disappeared. If you know of a copy of this video that is still accessible, please mail me so that I can update the link.

Do you ever post anything that isn't gas mask porn?

Of course there's controversy. See, there's... um... the gas masks, and burqas and... a kid with a bandolier so that's controversial... and then there's explosions, rapping about latte, irony, some more irony, another explosion, toilet defacement, hose-as-penis symbolism, and something at the end which either means Bush is really good or really bad, I'm not sure. Oh, and the fashion industry is bad. Or the fashion industry is war and grenades are... K-Mart, I think.

But it's clearly controversial. What does the poor woman have to do to make you squirm? Dress up as Pol Pot and smack a baby nun seal with a haddock?

I think Madonna was hoping that MTV would refuse to play it, because that ploy worked wonders for Justify My Love. Unfortunately it's too boring to ban. The song is a calculated, self-obsessed collage of images that questions (or doesn't?) being a calculated, self-obsessed collage of images. So then she voluntarily withdraws it and it just happens to appear on the web a few days later.

Madonna has been tiresome for more than a decade now. I admit the crotch thrusts might be better at >5fps.

5 fps is the theoretical maximum for realplayer right?

In case you're wondering if the peace symbol is part of the video - it's not. It's what the TV station (Viva) chose to display instead of their logo after the war in Iraq started.

Glad you pointed that out. I was looking at it and thought it seemed tacky compared to the rest of the clip. Now I know why.

    • jwz says:

Yup, I had assumed it was part of the video: that it was supposed to be some gag about "this video is actually a newscast on the 'peace' network" or some such nonsense.

      Oh, these post-ironic times.

    1. What a terrible terrible song
    2. With terrible lyrics
    3. and a terrible 'nuevo-retro' arrangment
    4. and that stupid fucking autotune effect that everyone uses that never has and never will sound cool or even good
    5. the video is unremarkable, and I can't believe anyone is talking about that because
