He stole this from a Raymond Chandler novel. Still a good idea, though...and one which, in my youth, I very nearly implemented on quite a few occasions.
what novel? i read one of his short stories once (from "Cathedral," which is sitting around here somewhere), but i don't remember reading about this.
That's Raymond Carver. Raymond Chandler wrote noir fiction. So I suppose you didn't steal it, but there's an elderly, er, drunk in the novel The Long Goodbye(I think) who does the same thing.

Also there's the joke on the Simpsons: Moe gives Barney "Morning After" stationary which is imprinted with flowery script reading "I am deeply sorry for..."
This is better though.
