Bar Monkey

What those crazy nerds are up to in the dorms these days:

The Bar Monkey, simply put, is a vending machine that serves mixed drinks. It houses 16 reservoirs which currently contain the following ingredients: [...]

Using these 16 ingredients, a total of 188 different drinks can be made, with the included ability to add ounce increments of each ingredient to customize (or create) a drink. The drink database is easy to update and nearly infinitely expandable. [...]

I'm kinda disappointed they didn't give either the source code or the database of drinks. Or both, natch. I guess I'm just going to have to stick with the Internet Bartender list for now.

the drink database isn't such a big deal--the intarweb already provides far more drink recipes than anyone is likely to need in a lifetime; but it certainly would have been nice to see the source to the software they developed, and/or schematics for the hardware.

they probably just timed the pumps and stored info on how long to run the pump for an ounce. Then it's just relays for the pumps and a little board to activate each relay on command. I imagine the sounce and schematics would be really simple. my only concern would be with how sanitary the windshield washer fluid pumps are.

  4. This is a thing of beauty.

My favorite series of sci-fi short stories of all times is about an alcoholic who has two personalities : one of a good technician and another of a genius inventor. The problem is that the genius part only works when the guy is very drunk. When he wakes up, he gets into all kinds of trouble caused by the machines he created.

He had this electronic bar, which he called "the alcohol organ". Here it is on the cover of the ultra rare first edition of the book.

Bars with "metered pouring" really, really suck. Exhibit A: England. You can't get a decent mixed drink in that country to save your life.

The obvious joke: Devon + bartending school = "bar monkey".
